Observe phaseInformation Gathering

Information

Definition

Belief that furtherly acquired information generates additional relevant data, even when it evidently does not.

Classification reasoning

Information Bias leads to additional unnecessary ‘observations’. Architects believe that gathering additional information can lead to better decision-making despite all the information being already available.

Example

NoSQL database selection: In the situation where enough information is available about NoSQL alternatives like Aerospike, Apache Ignite, MongoDB, Couchbase, FoundationDB, Oracle NoSQL DB, Redis etc. is available, architects tend to look for more information.

Impact

The additional information gathered adds no value and ends up wasting precious resources.

Debiasing techniques

Make iterations when enough information is available about alternatives. Use available information to move to orient and decide phases instead of being paralyzed in observe phase. Loopback to observe phase in case there is a need for extra data.
